Eyes On: Erdoğan Bıktım

Carving Michael Jackson’s Legacy in Wood

Michael Jackson’s legacy continues to inspire creativity across the world, transcending cultures, languages and artistic disciplines. In Istanbul, Türkiye, that inspiration recently took shape in wood, thanks to the skilled hands of professional sculptor Erdoğan Bıktım. His latest creation, a stunning hand-carved relief portrait of the King of Pop, is both a showcase of exceptional craftsmanship and a heartfelt tribute to one of music’s greatest icons.

A professional woodcarver and sculptor, Erdoğan is known for transforming solid blocks of wood into intricate works of art. For this particular project, he chose to honour Michael Jackson by creating a detailed relief portrait, carved entirely by hand from a single piece of wood.

Every detail of the portrait, from the contours of Michael’s face to the subtle expression in his eyes, was carefully sculpted through hours of carving, refining and meticulous correction. According to Erdoğan, his ambition was not simply to reproduce Michael’s appearance, but to capture the presence and emotion that have made him such an unforgettable figure for millions around the world.

For the Turkish artist, the project quickly became much more than an exercise in craftsmanship.

“Michael Jackson inspired generations through his music, creativity and humanitarian work, and I wanted to express my respect for that legacy through the craft I have devoted myself to.”

That admiration is evident throughout the finished piece. Rather than creating a stylised interpretation, Erdoğan focused on producing a timeless portrait that reflects both Michael’s humanity and the lasting impact of his legacy.

The artist also documented the entire creative journey, allowing viewers to watch the portrait gradually emerge from a solid block of wood. Seeing the sculpture evolve cut by cut offers an even greater appreciation for the patience, precision and dedication required to achieve such an impressive result.

When sharing the completed portrait on social media, Erdoğan accompanied it with a heartfelt message explaining the inspiration behind his work:

“Some people are remembered for the works they leave behind. Others are remembered for the kindness they bring into this world. Only a very few are remembered for both.

Years pass, generations change, but true inspiration is timeless. It quietly continues to find its way from one heart to another.

We are grateful not only for the music, but also for the kindness, compassion, and countless lives he touched.

This portrait is more than a wood carving. It is a tribute to a man who inspired millions around the world.

We remember him not only for what he gave to the world, but for who he was.

As long as inspiration lives in even one heart, you will continue to live.”

It’s a touching tribute that echoes the feelings of many Michael Jackson fans around the globe and perfectly complements the care and passion invested in the sculpture itself.

At MJVibe, we’ve featured artists working in a wide variety of mediums over the years, from paintings and digital illustrations to photography and sculpture. It’s always inspiring to discover creators who continue to celebrate Michael’s legacy through their own unique artistic vision, and Erdoğan Bıktım’s work is a wonderful example of that enduring inspiration.
