Radio Station in trouble with the Estate over the use of “King of Pop”

VRT Radio station “Studio Brussel” in Belgium is in trouble with the Michael Jackson Estate over the use of “King of Pop” for one of their Sunday quiz show.

The show started last September about pop music quiz but the Estate sent a legal letter to the radio station’s mother company VRT to change the name of the show as they had no rights to use the trademarked name.

The estate of Michael Jackson has threatened legal action against Belgian broadcaster VRT over one of the programmes on its Studio Brussel radio station, pop quiz show ‘King Of Pop’.

“King of Pop” was legally trademarked by the Estate after 2009 and therefore they have the rights to sue any companies that are using the terminology without the Estate permission.

Presenter Stijn Van de Voorde says that the letter sent to VRT was “signed by a lot of lawyers” and “says that we are not allowed to use that name just like that. We did not even know that ‘King Of Pop’ was a protected trademark”.

“It is pretty cool that these people know we exist, but it is kind of stupid that they are making such a fuss about it”, he adds. “Funny that they have only just discovered this now. I think they spend all day looking for ways to sue people and make money. It’s all very American”.

We do remember the Estate sued a popcorn company for using “King of Pop” as their website and tagline in 2016 so this is not new for the Estate to go that route!
