Michael Jackson’s Red Tunic from the 1981 AMAs Up for Auction [RR Auction]

A bedazzled red tunic worn by Michael Jackson at the 1981 American Music Awards is up for auction online at Boston-based auction house, RR Auction. The current bid stands at $6,600, however the piece is estimated to go for more than $100K. The tunic comes with a pair of gray silk trousers featuring a rhinestone stripe down outer the seam and a sewn-in label reading “Michael,” which were custom made for the singer’s big night. However, Jackson ultimately paired the tunic with jeans for the show.

Michael Jackson’s iconic red tunic worn during his appearance at the 8th American Music Awards on January 30, 1981. The elaborately designed and satin-lined top consists of a rhinestoned V-neck sweater with black bands on the upper sleeves and additional beadwork to the collar, cuffs, and waistband. A concealed zipper runs along a seam from below the left armpit to left waistband. Below the sweater is a rhinestoned white silk dickie with tuxedo collar and a black bow tie. Also includes Jackson’s custom-made gray silk pants with rhinestone stripes on outside legs, with a sewn-in label reading, “Michael.” Jackson ultimately decided to wear a pair of blue jeans to the event. In fine condition. The night proved to be a spectacular one for Jackson, whose debut solo album Off the Wall received accolades for Favorite Soul/R&B Artist and Album. Jackson famously wore this tunic when posed alongside Diana Ross following the ceremony, a moment which affirmed Jackson as the new ‘king of pop.’
