The Lost Spike Lee movie about Michael Jackson

We all know that Spike Lee has been a huge supporter of Michael Jackson. Not only he directed the two amazing short films for “They Don’t Care About Us” but he also produced documentaries and events about the King of Pop.

But did you know that in 2010, Spike was planning a movie about Michael Jackson?

Samuel L. Jackson back then made the headlines by revealing that Spike Lee was stewing on a new feature film project titled “Brooklyn Loves Michael Jackson”. He said “He [Spike Lee] has written a movie about these folks who want to have a big concert in a Brooklyn park for Michael, and the new gentrified people that live in the neighbourhood are worried about the kind of element that might be coming into the neighbourhood”.

At the time, Samuel L. Jackson also expressed hope that Julianne Moore would join the project as his character’s wife.

Meanwhile, reports of an inside source claiming that not only had Moore been cast in the film, but “Do the Right Thing” cast members John Turturro and Rosie Perez were also on board. Bringing so many notable actors from his past work would seem to make “Brooklyn Loves Michael Jackson” an important project for Spike Lee. However, just a year later, during a live Q&A with Spike Lee where the filmmaker was asked about “Brooklyn Loves Michael Jackson”, he said that the feature wasn’t happening. Lee never divulged why this film wasn’t going forward, though Samuel L.’s enthusiasm for the production makes it clear it wasn’t because of a reluctant cast.

In the same year, 2011, Spike Lee organised a tribute event for the King of Pop called… “Brooklyn Loves Michael Jackson” and this event happened every year until 2020 which took place virtually due to COVID.

Since, Spike Lee worked with the Michael Jackson Estate to release documentaries about the King of Pop. The First one, “BAD25” was released in 2012 in conjunction with the Anniversary Album of the same name and in 2016 “Michael Jackson’s Journey from Motown to Off the Wall” was released along with a reissue of the original Off the Wall album on February 26.

After “Michael Jackson’s Journey from Motown to Off the Wall” release, fans were expecting another documentary but this time about “THRILLER”, due to the ending of the documentary.

Recent comments from John Branca and the Estate suggest that the next chapter is more likely to be about “HIStory” album. No confirmations for a release have been communicated yet from both parties.

  1. I love the idea of the Brooklyn loves MJ film. The timing would be great for that right now, because it could deal with people’s negative misconceptions about Michael, which the people attending the event could help dispel as the movie unfolds.
Personally I’d prefer a HIStory (or Dangerous) documentary rather than Spike’s choice of Thriller. I think we’ve already had so much of Thriller, which fortunately continues to sell and get airings sufficient to maintain its legendary status. A reissue of the film as presented by John Landis at the 3D screenings, along with the original ‘making of’ documentary would be nice to have! A doco on the making of the album would have to involve Quincy Jones, and I think they’ve paid him enough already.
