Rich + Tone Bring Michael Jackson’s Spirit to Tokyo for Michael Promotion Launch

Tokyo witnessed an electrifying celebration of Michael Jackson’s legacy on May 9 as the “Michael Dance Challenge” kicked off the Japanese promotion for the upcoming biopic Michael at Kabukicho Cinecity Plaza. The event united fans, dancers, and key figures connected to the King of Pop’s world, including choreographers Rich + Tone Talauega, who are responsible for choreography work on the highly anticipated film (and worked on the HIStory Tour)

The special event featured Travis Japan leader Kaito Miyachika, renowned dancer Kent Mori, and finally Rich + Tone themselves, whose appearance sparked huge cheers from the crowd.

Miyachika, whose group Travis Japan was created by longtime Michael Jackson collaborator Travis Payne, was officially introduced as the Japanese ambassador for Michael. Speaking passionately about Michael’s influence, Miyachika shared:

“I received so much from Travis Payne as a legacy, and whenever I see Michael, I just want to practice.”

He reflected on how Michael Jackson’s dedication to artistic expression continues to inspire him personally and professionally.

Kent Mori, who famously earned an exclusive dancer contract for Michael Jackson’s THIS IS IT after competing against nearly 5,000 dancers worldwide, described Michael as “the savior of the world” and emphasized the positive message behind his art. Mori even revealed he was wearing a hat once gifted to him by Madonna and connected to Michael’s world.

Both Miyachika and Mori had already seen Michael and praised the film enthusiastically. Miyachika promised fans:

“It’s a work that will make you love Michael even more — about 100 levels higher.”

Mori was equally emotional, praising Jaafar Jackson’s portrayal of his uncle:

“Embodying Michael Jackson is the most difficult thing in the world. Under enormous pressure, Jaafar achieves it at an incredible level. It deserves a standing ovation.”

The emotional peak of the event arrived when Rich + Tone took the stage. The legendary choreographers, known for their deep understanding of Michael Jackson’s dance language, spoke about the responsibility of recreating Michael’s artistry for the big screen.

Rich explained:

“First of all, authenticity and realism were extremely important to us. Michael’s dance style is unique. We treated it with enormous respect in every step of the choreography.”

He also revealed that Jaafar Jackson underwent two years of intensive preparation for the role.

The event concluded with fans joining the guests for a celebratory dance to “Beat It.” Rich reflected on the impact the song had on him growing up:

“The first Michael video I ever saw as a kid was ‘Beat It.’ I remember thinking how beautiful the message was.”

Tone added:

“It’s a song about unity through music and dance.”

Kent Mori connected that message directly to today’s world:

“The message the world needs most right now is ‘Beat It’ — and Michael Jackson.”

As excitement builds worldwide, Japan’s launch event demonstrated just how powerful Michael Jackson’s legacy remains across generations. More than just a movie promotion, the gathering became a celebration of Michael’s artistry, message, and continuing influence on performers around the world.

For fans in Tokyo, however, the biggest takeaway came directly from the people closest to Michael’s creative spirit: his message of unity, passion, and dance still moves the world.
