After an incredible 67-week national tour, MJ The Musical has officially played its final performance in Australia, bringing the curtain down on one of the country’s most successful musical theatre tours.
The production visited Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth, where it captivated audiences with the story behind Michael Jackson’s Dangerous World Tour and celebrated his legendary music and artistry. Over the course of its Australian run, the show was seen by more than 875,000 people across 532 performances, with sold-out seasons in Brisbane and Perth and standing ovations becoming a regular occurrence.
Beyond its success at the box office, the production made a significant contribution to Australia’s theatre industry. Since being announced in 2023, MJ The Musical provided employment for 290 Australians across performing, creative and technical roles. The touring company included 72 full-time members, supported by 42 local musicians and more than 400 local staff across the four cities. In addition, the production supported over 200 Australians through businesses providing specialist services including freight, construction, marketing, publicity, physiotherapy and more.
The Australian company was led by Ilario Grant in the title role and also helped launch the careers of a new generation of Australian performers, with several cast members making their professional stage debuts during the production’s run.
Australian producer Michael Cassel reflected on the journey of bringing the Tony Award-winning musical to Australia:

Since premiering on Broadway in 2022, MJ The Musical has now been seen by more than 7 million people worldwide, with productions continuing across Broadway, the North American tour, London’s West End, Germany, and with the Netherlands set to become the next country to welcome the production in 2027.
As Australia says farewell to the show, the production leaves behind unforgettable memories, with audiences dancing during the curtain calls and countless fans leaving theatres inspired by the timeless music and legacy of Michael Jackson.
