Michael Jackson Estate Confirms eBay “Billie Jean” American Music Award Is Not Authentic

A listing that recently appeared on eBay claiming to offer one of Michael Jackson’s most iconic music awards has generated considerable discussion among fans and collectors. The item, described as Michael Jackson’s American Music Award for Favorite Pop/Rock Single for “Billie Jean”, was presented as a rare opportunity to own a historic piece of music memorabilia.

Had the trophy been genuine, it would have represented one of the most significant Michael Jackson artifacts ever to appear on the public market. The original award was presented at the 11th American Music Awards in 1984, recognizing the phenomenal success of “Billie Jean,” the groundbreaking single from Thriller that spent seven weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and helped redefine modern pop music.

Initially, the listing included photographs and documentation that the seller claimed supported the trophy’s provenance. However, there was no independent verification that the award was authentic or that it had ever belonged to Michael Jackson.

Following inquiries, the Estate of Michael Jackson has now provided a definitive response.

John Branca, co-executor of the Michael Jackson Estate, confirmed that all of Michael Jackson’s American Music Awards trophies, including the Favorite Pop/Rock Single award for “Billie Jean,” remain in the possession of the Estate. The awards have been carefully preserved since Michael’s passing and continue to be stored securely in the Estate’s warehouse.

In fact, many fans have already seen these genuine trophies on display during special events held at the Hayvenhurst Estate, including the annual Halloween gatherings organized by Prince Jackson in support of the Heal Los Angeles Foundation.

With this confirmation from the Estate, there is little doubt that the trophy currently being offered on eBay is not Michael Jackson’s authentic American Music Award.

Despite the Estate’s unequivocal statement, the eBay listing continues to attract bidders. At the time of writing, the purported “Billie Jean” American Music Award has reached more than US$6,158. We genuinely feel sorry for anyone placing bids on this item, as they may believe they are competing for a genuine piece of Michael Jackson history. With the Estate confirming that the real award has never left its possession, we strongly urge collectors to exercise extreme caution and always verify provenance before committing significant sums of money to high-profile memorabilia.

While remarkable discoveries occasionally emerge, this is not one of them. Thanks to the Estate’s prompt clarification, fans and collectors can be assured that one of Michael Jackson’s most treasured honors remains exactly where it belongs: preserved as part of his enduring legacy.
