Jackson Art Café in Kabul served with a double meaning.

Afghanistan hasn’t been the best place on earth to be free of speaking and being artistic but the country is changing over its radical views not only on arts but also on women.

Trendy new cafes have sprung up across Kabul in the past three years, evolving into emblems of women’s progress.

The cafes are sanctuaries for women in an Islamic culture that still dictates how they should dress, behave in public and interact with men. Those traditions endure 18 years after the toppling of the Taliban, who banned girls’ education, confined women to their homes and forced them to wear burqas in public.

One of them called “Jackson Art Café” has been just that! The Café in honour of Michael Jackson has been a centre for art, public speeches and freedom for women and men who see a brighter future for their country.

The café serves also fast food and can hold any artistic events with a beautiful garden, meeting rooms and perfect environment to express yourself.

The description of the café by their owners says: “The purpose of the establishment of this cafe is not merely the material benefits of the team, but to create an atmosphere suitable for bringing together artists, cultures, and young people purposefully and clearly that the future will be in their hands.”

What an honour to have chosen Michael Jackson to represent such a beautiful message of freedom and hope for a country that has been such in a trouble turmoil!

A perfect place to visit if you are in Kabul!

  1. It is inspiring to read of such a place in a city that has made headlines for all the wrong reasons in recent years. Such a wonderful compliment to Michael – and so appropriate.
