Ilario Grant is set to return to Broadway in the title role of MJ, stepping back into the role of Michael Jackson following his acclaimed run in the Australian production of the Tony Award-winning musical.
Grant will begin performances as ‘MJ’ on Tuesday, September 15, succeeding Matte Martinez, who will play his final performance on Sunday, September 13.
Grant is no stranger to the Broadway production. He made his Broadway debut with MJ in 2023 at the Neil Simon Theatre, serving as a standby for both ‘MJ’ and ‘Michael.’
Following his Broadway debut, Grant took on the title role for the Australian production of MJ, opening the Melbourne, Perth and Brisbane productions. His portrayal of Michael Jackson received strong praise from Australian critics, with X-Press describing his performance as “nothing short of astonishing,” while The West Australian called it “a powerhouse performance.”
His return to Broadway will give audiences another opportunity to experience Grant’s interpretation of Michael Jackson and the electrifying performances at the heart of MJ.
Beyond the stage, Grant’s screen credits include Jermaine in NBCUniversal’s Praise This and Cecil in Tyler Perry’s Assisted Living on BET+. He is also an R&B artist and was recognized as a member of the group Afterours.
Since beginning Broadway performances in December 2021, MJ has welcomed more than 2 million patrons in New York, while the musical has reached more than 7 million people worldwide.
The production continues to make its mark internationally. MJ is currently playing in Hamburg, Germany, at the Stage Theater, starring Benét Monteiro, and is preparing for upcoming international tours across Asia and the United Kingdom.
On Broadway, the production has also broken the box office record at the Neil Simon Theatre 11 times, further cementing MJ as one of the most successful new musicals inspired by the life and music of Michael Jackson.
With Ilario Grant now returning to Broadway, fans will soon have the chance to see an actor already familiar with the role bring his acclaimed interpretation of Michael Jackson back to the New York stage.
