Ballet Company in trouble in Spain for performing “They Don’t Care About Us”

Let’s put a bit of context here:

Last week the 59th Army Awards gala was held at the Army War College in Madrid.

The Gala is usually formed of speeches, Awards (of course) and different artistic acts which usually no one really pay attention to.

Leaders of the Spanish Army and the minister of defence are of course front row.

But this year, an act has made controversy, especially on social media where people judged the performance “shameful”, “undignified”, “grotesque”…

Eight members of the company Ballet de Cuca Pons performed their act, 14min in the Awards Gala which was live streaming, they entered the stage dressed as military and to the rhythm of Michael Jackson’s “They Don’t Care About Us”.

Obviously, the backlash was instant on social media and it is due to the meaning of the song and the context it was performed in. Many Social Media Karens took on themselves to voice their outrages and the local press also were not keen of the performance calling it ridiculous.

While the choreography is an interpretation of the song, it might be not of the taste for everyone. But if the song was selected in purpose, this is actually a brilliant artistic protest. If not, that was just a faux-pas that the ballet company might be remembered for a very long time.

Meanwhile, as a Michael Jackson fan, I liked it. Yes the choreography is not too complicated and might seems as a talent show performance, but if this was to peacefully protest against wars, I think it is great!

I leave you judge of the performance in the video below:
