I’ve always considered their Christmas tracks a curious sign of how the Jackson family, when Michael was a child, were happy to ignore the restrictions of the Jehovah’s Witness faith for financial gain. Yet as a young man, Michael wrestled with his conscience before the release of the Thriller video for fear of giving the wrong impression of his beliefs and upsetting church elders. It says a lot to me of his scruples compared to those of some other members of his family. Even when he’d left the church, he admitted in his Home Videos special that it was still hard for him to celebrate Christmas when Elizabeth Taylor decorated his home at Neverland. I can appreciate his lingering conflict given the mixed messages of his upbringing – the strict requirements of his mother’s faith vs. the family’s constant striving for material success. Talk about mixed messages! Still, I hope this re-issue brings joy to his fans in 2019.
