Actor KeiLyn Durrel Jones recently spoke about portraying Michael Jackson’s longtime bodyguard and trusted confidant, Bill Bray, in Michael. According to Jones, Bray’s importance in Michael’s life went far beyond security duties.
While researching the role, Jones discovered that Bray was viewed by many as a father figure, mentor, protector, and confidant to Michael. Through conversations with people who knew both men, he came to understand the deep bond they shared behind the spotlight.
One of the key aspects Jones wanted to capture was Bray’s ability to create a safe space for Michael. Rather than telling him what to do, Bray listened, offered guidance when needed, and allowed the future King of Pop to develop his creative independence. Jones described Bray as the opposite of Joe Jackson’s strict approach, providing Michael with the freedom and support that helped him grow as an artist.
The actor explained that playing Bray required restraint. Instead of stealing scenes with dramatic actions or lengthy dialogue, he focused on being present and truthful in every moment. He believes the character demonstrates that someone can have a major impact without being the loudest person in the room.
Jones highlighted several scenes with Jaafar Jackson where Bray simply listens while Michael works through his thoughts and frustrations. He sees those moments as some of the most important in the film, showing how Bray offered emotional support during pivotal stages of Michael’s life and career.
Reflecting on the role, Jones said one of the biggest lessons he learned is that a person can be “integral” without saying much or taking center stage. He pointed to Bray’s memorable line, “It’s over,” as proof that sometimes a few words can carry tremendous weight.
Ultimately, Jones hopes audiences leave the theater appreciating Bray’s influence and recognizing the importance of having someone in their own lives who provides unconditional support, understanding, and a space to be themselves.
