Michael Jackson’s Music Takes Centre Stage in Dance Competitions Around the World

Michael Jackson’s influence on dance continues to inspire performers around the world, with dancers of different ages and styles bringing his music to life at international festivals and freestyle competitions.

Over the past few months, Michael’s music has featured in a series of exciting dance performances and battles, including the Australian Dance Festival and the global Red Bull Dance Your Style competition. From carefully choreographed routines to spontaneous freestyle battles, these performances are a reminder of the extraordinary connection between Michael’s music and movement.

With the success of the Michael biopic bringing renewed attention to his artistry, it is particularly exciting to see dancers continuing to discover, reinterpret and celebrate the music that helped shape modern popular dance.

Dynamic Studio Delivers at the Australian Dance Festival

Held from September 18 to 20, 2026, at Sydney Olympic Park, the Australian Dance Festival brought together dancers, studios and choreographers for a weekend of workshops, performances and competitions.

The annual event celebrates dance talent from across Australia, giving performers opportunities to showcase their abilities, learn from leading choreographers and share their passion for movement.

Among the performances was an impressive routine by Dynamic Studio, which brought Michael Jackson’s music and unmistakable dance influence to the stage.

The performance is another example of how Michael’s music continues to inspire dance studios and performers, encouraging new generations to explore the creativity, musicality and precision associated with his work.

Red Bull Dance Your Style Brings Michael Jackson to the Dance Floor

Michael’s influence was also visible throughout the 2026 season of Red Bull Dance Your Style, the international street-dance competition that challenges dancers to improvise to music they do not know in advance.

The competition features one-on-one freestyle battles, with dancers responding to unexpected tracks and using their creativity, musicality and personality to win over the audience. Unlike traditional dance competitions, there is no judging panel: the crowd decides who advances and ultimately who wins.

National competitions took place in countries around the world before the season reached its climax at the Red Bull Dance Your Style World Final in Zurich, Switzerland, on October 24.

The sold-out final brought 16 dancers together in front of 7,500 spectators. French dancer Willis emerged as the 2026 world champion after defeating South Korean waacking dancer Yoon Ji in the final. For the first time, fans watching the livestream could also vote, joining the audience inside the venue in deciding the winner.

Throughout the wider competition season, dancers have been filmed battling to a variety of tracks, including songs by Michael Jackson. These unexpected musical selections provide a fascinating opportunity to see how performers interpret his rhythms, vocal accents and distinctive musical arrangements through their own individual styles.

Among the dancers whose performances have caught attention are Jesse Alexander Sykes from the United States, Brazilian dancer Andre, and Lil Syd, the Austrian dancer who qualified for the World Final. Their different approaches to freestyle demonstrate how one artist’s music can inspire an extraordinary range of movement.

Jesse Sykes, a dancer from Layton, Utah, is particularly associated with waving and popping, styles that use controlled movements and striking body isolations. He reached the final four at the Red Bull Dance Your Style USA National Final in Tampa on September 19.

Lil Syd, meanwhile, represented Austria at the World Final after progressing through the international qualification process. His appearance in Zurich underlined the competition’s international reach and the diversity of dance styles brought together by its format.

Another young performer attracting attention in the wider dance scene is Miyu Matamiyu, a 12-year-old dancer from Jakarta, Indonesia. Known for her hip-hop and freestyle abilities, Miyu has already gained international recognition, including through her appearance with Motiv Crew on World of Street Woman Fighter in 2025.

Her performances are a reminder that Michael’s music continues to reach dancers from a remarkably young age, inspiring them to develop their own skills and personalities rather than simply reproduce familiar choreography.

A Legacy That Continues Through Dance

What makes these performances so exciting is the way they demonstrate the lasting influence of Michael Jackson’s artistry.

Michael was far more than a singer who danced. His understanding of rhythm, his precision, his use of pauses and accents, and his ability to connect movement to music helped establish a performance language that generations of dancers continue to study and reinterpret.

His influence can be seen in choreography, street dance, popping, animation, music videos and live performances. Yet freestyle battles offer a particularly interesting perspective: dancers have to react in the moment, finding their own interpretation of the music rather than relying on a rehearsed routine.

When a Michael Jackson song enters a dance battle, the challenge is to make every beat count. His music offers countless opportunities for creative expression, from subtle isolations and intricate footwork to explosive movements that capture the energy of the performance.

The continued appearance of his music at events such as the Australian Dance Festival and Red Bull Dance Your Style also highlights the connection between Michael’s legacy and the next generation of performers.

As audiences rediscover his work through the Michael biopic, dance remains one of the most powerful ways to appreciate his contribution to popular culture. His music does not simply invite people to listen. It makes them want to move.

And whether on a festival stage in Australia or in a freestyle battle in front of thousands of spectators in Switzerland, Michael Jackson continues to give dancers around the world a reason to step onto the floor.
