17 years after the passing of Michael Jackson, fans across the globe once again came together on June 25 to honor the life, legacy and music of the King of Pop.
From Los Angeles to London, Madrid to Munich, Gary to Guangzhou, thousands of admirers gathered at memorials and landmarks associated with Michael, proving once again that his influence continues to unite people across cultures and generations.
This year’s commemorations were particularly significant following the worldwide success of the Michael biopic, which introduced a new generation to his artistry and inspired even larger gatherings in several cities. While attendance may have grown, the emotions remained unchanged: a shared sense of loss mixed with gratitude for one of the greatest entertainers the world has ever known.
Traditional gathering places were filled with tributes throughout the day. Fans visited Forest Lawn in Los Angeles, Michael Jackson’s star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and the Jackson family home in Gary, Indiana. These iconic locations were decorated with photographs of Michael, handwritten messages, flowers, candles and countless gifts left by devoted admirers.
Across the world, other well-known fan memorials also became places of remembrance. In Munich, Germany, the fan-created memorial surrounding the statue of Renaissance composer Orlando di Lasso was once again covered in tributes. In Guangzhou, China, fans gathered at the Michael Jackson statue, while supporters in Australia paid their respects at Michael’s memorial site at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Sydney.
One of the most touching tributes this year was a coordinated effort by fans to play and sing “Heal the World” at the exact moment Michael left this Earth.
In London’s Trafalgar Square, dozens of fans joined together to sing the anthem of hope and unity. Meanwhile, one of the most remarkable scenes unfolded in Madrid, where thousands of people gathered in the city’s iconic central square to sing Heal the World together at 11:26 p.m. local time. The emotional performance transformed the square into a powerful celebration of Michael’s enduring message of love, peace and compassion.
Nearly two decades after his passing, Michael Jackson’s music continues to inspire, comfort and bring people together. Around the world, June 25 remains not only a day of remembrance, but also a celebration of an extraordinary artist whose legacy continues to transcend borders, generations and time itself.
