The World Mourns: Giorgio Armani (1934–2025)

Milan, September 4, 2025 — Giorgio Armani, the visionary Italian couturier revered as the “king” of luxury ready-to-wear, has passed away at the age of 91. Armani died peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, leaving behind a global fashion empire and a legacy of timeless elegance.

Life & Career

Born on July 11, 1934, in Piacenza, Italy, Armani initially pursued medical studies in Milan before shifting to fashion. After a stint in the army, he started as a window dresser and sales clerk before working for Nino Cerruti in menswear design. In 1975, he and partner Sergio Galeotti founded Giorgio Armani S.p.A., beginning what would become an iconic fashion house encompassing ready-to-wear, accessories, fragrances, home furnishings, and luxury hotels.

Armani revolutionized fashion in the 1970s by deconstructing traditional tailoring—favoring softly structured, fluid silhouettes, especially in his signature soft-shouldered jackets. This understated elegance reshaped power dressing for both men and women. His collaboration with Hollywood—most famously dressing Richard Gere in American Gigolo (1980)—catapulted him to international acclaim.

Renowned for his obsessive attention to detail—right down to model hair and stationery hue—Armani maintained complete creative and business control as both CEO and sole (or near-sole) shareholder. His brand, still privately held, achieved annual revenues in the billions, exemplifying both artistic leadership and business savvy.

In a final Financial Times interview published August 29, just days before his death, Armani reflected, “My only regret in life was spending too many hours working and not enough time with friends and family.” He also outlined his vision for “organic” succession, naming longtime collaborator Leo Dell’Orco and family members as key figures in guiding the brand forward.

A Brief Note on Michael Jackson

Although Armani never directly dressed Michael Jackson, there was a notable moment where their worlds almost converged. When Jackson approached Armani for a look during his Dangerous era, Armani declined upon realizing he would not retain full creative control over the concept. It’s a telling detail: Armani’s brand was not just about fashion—it was about his singular vision.

Legacy

Armani’s passing has deeply moved the world of fashion and beyond. A solitary red rose now rests outside his Milan headquarters as tribute to the designer who redefined modern elegance. Tributes from celebrities, world leaders, and employees underscore his legacy of refinement and humility. Milan Fashion Week this month will feature his final collection—the poignant capstone to his golden era of design.
