Miles Teller as John Branca in MICHAEL Trailer Sparks Strong Fan Reactions

The teaser trailer for the upcoming MICHAEL biopic gave us only a fleeting glimpse of Miles Teller as attorney John Branca, yet those few seconds have ignited major discussion across the Michael Jackson fan community. Teller’s transformation, long hair, facial prosthetics and a nearly unrecognizable look, instantly caught attention, but it wasn’t just his appearance that got people talking. It was who he was portraying, and how prominently he appeared in the marketing.

The internet buzzed with mixed reactions as soon as the trailer dropped. Some fans were surprised to see Teller in such a visibly stylised portrayal of Branca, while others admitted they rolled their eyes at the sight of the attorney being featured so clearly in the first preview. With Teller being one of the most recognizable names in the cast, many expected the trailer to highlight him, but that hasn’t eased concerns among sections of the fan community who are wary about how Branca’s role in Michael’s life may be depicted on screen.

Teller himself has reacted to the chatter, revealing that his look is far less dramatic than social media assumed. “It’s just a wig,” he clarified, noting that he isn’t online often but has been told about the conversations surrounding his transformation. He also praised the film’s hair and makeup team and hinted at the meticulous attention to detail involved, adding that the Michael Jackson Estate has been heavily involved throughout production. Speaking about Jaafar Jackson’s portrayal of his uncle, Teller was adamant: “People are going to freak out. He has so much natural Michael Jackson DNA in him, and the work he put in — years before cameras rolled — is unbelievable.”

While praise continues to build for Jaafar Jackson’s portrayal, the unexpected focus on Branca in the teaser has brought to the surface old questions and long-standing tensions in the fan base. Branca undeniably played significant roles in Michael’s business history, from the purchase of the Beatles’ publishing catalogue to structuring deals that protected major assets, including efforts related to Michael’s masters and the acquisition of Neverland Ranch. His involvement helped strengthen Michael’s position as one of the most powerful artists in the music industry.

However, the relationship between Michael Jackson and Branca was not without controversy. Michael dismissed Branca at various points in his career, and court filings later surfaced in which Michael questioned financial dealings and loyalty. After Michael’s passing, decisions made by estate leadership, including the handling of personal items and costumes, the release of disputed vocals on the posthumous album Michael, and the eventual sale of a significant portion of Michael’s music catalogue to Sony, despite Michael’s public statements against such a move, have remained contentious issues for many fans. Branca has always denied wrongdoing, but the record shows a complex history that still fuels debate within the MJ community today.

What heightened concern further was not just Branca’s clear presence in the trailer, but the absence, at least so far, of one of the most visible figures from Michael’s career: Frank DiLeo. DiLeo, Michael’s manager during the Thriller, Bad and Victory Tour eras, was frequently by Michael’s side in public, from tour rehearsals to press events. His personality and loyalty made him a beloved figure among fans. So far, it appears he is not represented in the film, at least not visibly in this first teaser. For many long-time followers of Michael’s journey, DiLeo was the face beside him during some of his greatest achievements, far more publicly present than Branca. This contrast has prompted the worry that the film may amplify certain figures while overlooking others who had a more visible and emotional connection to Michael’s life and career.

As one fan shared online, “Frank DiLeo was in front of the cameras with Michael. Branca was behind the contracts. If the movie flips that, it’s rewriting history.”

Frank DiLeo’s daughter, Belinda, also raised concerns:

Despite the debates, excitement around the film is enormous, particularly surrounding Jaafar Jackson’s performance and the scale of production. The trailer broke global viewing records for a music biopic, proving yet again the unmatched level of anticipation for a proper cinematic telling of Michael Jackson’s life.

The MICHAEL biopic arrives in theatres on April 24, 2026, and if the first teaser is any indication, the conversation is only just beginning. Fans worldwide hope the film stays true to Michael’s story and keeps the spotlight where it belongs: on the man, the music, and the legacy he built.
