On August 29, Michael Jackson fans in Bucharest gathered for two deeply meaningful events, celebrating the restoration of two important landmarks connected to the King of Pop’s history in Romania.
August 29 has always been a special date for Michael Jackson fans around the world. In Bucharest, however, this year’s birthday celebrations carried an additional significance.
On Saturday, August 29, 2026, the Romanian Michael Jackson Fan Club Bucharest marked the occasion with two important events dedicated to preserving Michael’s legacy: the unveiling of the restored “Heal The World” plaque at the former Sf. Ecaterina’s Orphanage, and the re-inauguration of the Michael Jackson monument on Michael Jackson Way in Herăstrău Park, followed by the annual fan commemoration.
Both projects were made possible through the determination and generosity of the Romanian Michael Jackson fan community, who have worked to ensure that these physical reminders of Michael’s connection with Romania are not lost to time.
Returning The Heal The World Plaque
The first event took place at 4:30 PM, at the former Sf. Ecaterina’s Orphanage, where Michael Jackson made his historic visit on September 30, 1992.
For those unfamiliar with its story, the blue plaque depicting a globe held by two children’s hands has stood above the property’s fence for decades. It commemorates Michael’s visit to the institution and the humanitarian work carried out through his newly established Heal The World Foundation.
When Michael arrived at the orphanage in 1992, he was welcomed by Romanian officials, hundreds of children and thousands of people gathered outside. His visit included meeting the children, visiting the newborn babies’ ward and meeting Princess Ecaterina Caradja, better known in the United States as the “Angel of Ploiești.”
Michael also officially inaugurated a new playground for the children, an initiative connected to the Heal The World Foundation.
The blue plaque was installed to commemorate this historic moment and the place where the foundation’s charitable work in Romania began.
More than three decades later, the plaque had become badly deteriorated.
The Romanian fan community decided that it could not simply be allowed to disappear.
A Difficult Restoration
Restoring the plaque was not a simple matter of cleaning it up.
The former orphanage is no longer an orphanage and the site now accommodates institutions and services dedicated to children. Access is therefore restricted, meaning that the restoration required considerable coordination and official permissions.
The restoration project took almost two years to complete.
On August 29, the work finally reached its emotional conclusion.
Attendees were given flyers explaining the history of the plaque and its restoration before Nicu Vidan gave a speech detailing Michael’s connection to the location and the historical importance of the site.
After the speech, the restored plaque was officially unveiled.
As the blue plaque was revealed once again, “Heal The World” played in the background.
Those attending immediately gathered around it, taking photographs and celebrating the return of a piece of Michael’s Romanian history.
After decades of exposure to the elements, the plaque was once again shining.
And, perhaps most importantly, its story was being remembered.
A Story That Goes Beyond Michael Jackson
The significance of the location goes beyond Michael’s visit.
St. Ecaterina’s has a long history of caring for vulnerable children, dating back to the late 19th century. The institution was established through the Saint Ecaterina Social Assistance Society, with the aim of caring for impoverished newborn children and supporting mothers who otherwise might have been forced to give up their babies.
The history of the institution is also connected to Princess Ecaterina Caradja, who devoted much of her life to charitable work involving children.
After returning to Romania following the fall of communism, the princess lived at the orphanage once again, surrounded by the children she had spent her life helping.
It was there, in 1992, that she met Michael Jackson.
Their meeting became one of the most memorable moments of Michael’s Romanian visit. The 99-year-old princess and the global superstar, both connected in very different ways to helping children, spent several emotional minutes together.
For Romanian fans, preserving the plaque therefore means preserving a small piece of a much larger historical story.
Back To Michael Jackson Way
After the plaque ceremony, fans made their way to the second location: Michael Jackson Way in Herăstrău Park.
Beginning at 5:30 PM, fans gathered around Michael’s monument for several hours, with the event continuing until approximately 9:00 PM.
The occasion served two purposes: the re-inauguration of the recently restored Michael Jackson monument and the annual commemoration held at the site.
The monument has a special place in Romanian fan history.
Following Michael’s death in 2009, Romanian fans and MTV Romania worked together to create a permanent tribute to the artist. After an extensive public campaign, a walkway in Bucharest’s Herăstrău Park was named Michael Jackson Way, with the memorial monument unveiled on August 29, 2009, Michael’s first birthday after his passing.
Seventeen years later, fans returned to the same location to celebrate its restoration.
A Gathering Of Memories
The atmosphere was very different from a formal ceremony.
Fans arrived carrying flowers, letters, photographs and candles. Some danced. Others sang. Many simply talked and shared memories of Michael and of the years they had spent together as part of the Romanian fan community.
For some, the event was also an opportunity to reconnect with friends they had not seen for many years.
Visual artist Domnica Carjaliu also displayed artworks dedicated to Michael around the monument, adding another creative element to the gathering.
The evening became less about a formal programme and more about the people who had kept Michael’s memory alive for so many years.
And that is perhaps what made the evening particularly special.
Preserving More Than Monuments
It is easy to look at a restored plaque or a repaired monument simply as an object.
But for the Romanian Michael Jackson community, these locations represent something much more.
The Heal The World plaque takes fans back to September 30, 1992 — to a time when Michael walked through the gates of St. Ecaterina’s, held babies in his arms, met children who had never imagined meeting him and helped provide them with a new playground.
The monument on Michael Jackson Way takes fans back to 2009, when thousands of Romanians came together after Michael’s death and decided that his connection with their city should have a permanent place.
Both landmarks have survived because people cared enough to preserve them.
And both now have another chapter in their history.
A Legacy Continued By Fans
The two August 29 events demonstrate something that has become increasingly important as the years pass: preserving Michael Jackson’s legacy is not only about remembering his music.
It is also about preserving the places, stories and memories connected to his life.
In Bucharest, fans have taken on that responsibility themselves.
They raised funds. They worked with architects and restoration specialists. They navigated official procedures and permissions. They gave their time and energy to projects that may never make international headlines but are immensely important to the people who understand their history.
And on August 29, 2026, they finally got to see the results.
The blue Heal The World plaque is once again back where Michael left it.
The Michael Jackson monument has been restored.
And the fans returned to both locations to celebrate.
More than three decades after Michael Jackson arrived in Bucharest, his connection with Romania remains visible, not only in photographs and memories, but in two physical landmarks that continue to tell his story.
As Nicu’s account beautifully captures, the plaque is now once again visible to those passing the former orphanage, carrying with it a message of love, peace and tolerance.
