Michael Jackson, the Goblin King

“Labyrinth” was released in 1986 as a musical fantasy directed by Jim Henson and George Lucas being the Executive Producer.

With David Bowie a the King of the Goblins, the movie costed $25 Million and only took $12.9 Million at the box office. However, the movie has became cult for many 80’s fans and also Bowie’s fans.

But did you know that Michael Jackson was considered by the main role of the Goblin’s King?

Jim Henson revealed that at the early stage of the production, he wanted either Michael Jackson or Sting to play Jareth, The King of the Goblins. Prince and Mick Jagger were also down the list of potential character.

Henson was already impressed by Michael Jackson’s skills with “Thriller” and “Billie Jean”‘s short films.

It is actually Brian, Jim’s son, who convinced him that David Bowie was the perfect fit for the role.

Frankly, I am glad Michael did not play the role of an evil goblin king who turns babies to goblins. Plus, the same year, George Lucas also worked on Disney’s 3D venture “Captain EO” which features Michael Jackson. A much better story and a much more successful Musical Science Fiction film! Plus Michael is in 3D!
