The upcoming sequel to Michael has been awarded approximately $30.8 million in California tax credits as production moves forward.
Michael 2 is one of 35 films selected in the latest round of incentives from the California Film Commission, with a total of $226 million in tax credits being allocated to productions filming in the state.
The sequel will receive $30.8 million in support, with the California Film Commission covering 35% of qualified production costs under the current incentive programme.
The original Michael also benefited from California’s film tax credit programme, receiving approximately $21 million in incentives during production. The film went on to become a global box-office phenomenon, eventually surpassing $1 billion worldwide.
The increased incentive available for the sequel reflects changes to California’s film and television production programme. While the original film qualified for a 17.5% credit, Michael 2 is eligible for the newer 35% rate.
The tax credit is designed to encourage major film productions to remain in California, supporting local crews, businesses and the wider production industry.
The sequel is being produced by Lionsgate, with Michael director Antoine Fuqua expected to return alongside the creative and production team behind the first film.
The original Michael, starring Jaafar Jackson as his uncle Michael Jackson, became one of the biggest films of 2026 and introduced Michael’s story to a huge new international audience.
With the sequel now receiving substantial state support, another major production is set to bring the Jackson story back to California.
