Jennifer Lopez to Receive Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award at 2018 VMAs

Despite our pledge, Missy Elliott will not be receiving the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award this year, But J-Lo will.

Jennifer Lopez will receive the prestigious Michael Jackson video vanguard award at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards. Lopez revealed the news live on MTV with Sway Calloway, followed by a Facebook Live interview on MTV’s official page.

The award, which has been passed out since the inaugural year of the award show, is given to music performers or directors with renowned accomplishments in music and film. Past recipients include influential acts such as Madonna, Rihanna, Britney Spears, Kanye West and David Bowie.

Lopez, whose career spans over two decades, has sold 80 million records worldwide, 40 million albums, had 16 top 10 hit songs, three No.1 albums and is the first woman to have a number one album and film in the same week, with J.Lo and the romantic comedy The Wedding Planner. Additionally, her production company, Nuyorican Productions, has produced hits like Boy Next Door, The Fosters, Shades of Blue, among others.

The singer, who was named one of Time’s “100 Most Influential People” in April, has also been heavily involved in humanitarian work, particularly after natural disasters. After Hurricane Irma and Hurricane Maria, Lopez and her partner, Alex Rodriguez donated $1 million to humanitarian aid for Puerto Rico and helped launch a humanitarian relief campaign, Somos Una Voz.

In addition to the award, Lopez is set to perform live at this year’s show for the first time since 2001 and is nominated for two VMAs for her single, “Dinero.”

The VMAs will air live from Radio City Music Hall on Monday, Aug. 20 at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT.
