Kinetic Energy Alive Dance Productions offers an annual workshop to teach community members the iconic “Thriller” dance from Michael Jackson’s classic ’80s zombie music video. Keeping this tradition alive in its sixth year, the company and workshop students perform on Pearl Street on Thursday, Oct. 31, at 7 p.m. This Halloween “flash mob” has turned into a community favorite.

Typically surrounded by the hundreds of Pearl Street trick-or-treaters, the K.E.A. Dance Crew performs a mini show in the street with the support of local fire and police departments. This performance opportunity gives newcomers, including those who might not consider themselves dancers, a chance to entertain the community. Even if it’s under heavy Halloween makeup, spontaneous dancers are still supported, encouraged and celebrated as they get up to join in with the dance company and perform “Thriller!”

This year, Director Kea Tesseyman is putting a cause behind her “Thriller” moves. Proceeds from the workshop and flash mob will be donated to organizations that benefit and support those struggling with mental health illnesses and depression. She also hopes to work with an organization that supports suicide prevention and brings awareness to the community about those who struggle with depression.

“I feel there are so many people who need help, support, confidence, love and community in this world, and they simply don’t have it. But we do. We are so blessed to live in this community and I want to share what support we can round up with those in need,” Tesseyman said. “For this workshop and future events, it is my hope to bring joy and financial support to those in need. I wouldn’t be here today if I did not receive support, encouragement and help when I was struggling with depression. So I’d like to pay it forward and use what I have — dance — to help others.”

The “Thriller” dance workshop is Sunday, Oct. 27, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Kinetic Energy Alive Dance Productions, 255 Molyneaux Rd. Community members who join will be asked to donated anything — even just $1 — for participation, but it is free to anyone who cannot afford to pay. Participants will learn an abbreviated version of the original dance in just two hours, and be invited to perform with the dance company on Halloween.
