EXHIBITION: The School of Los Angeles

Photography fans in Los Angeles have a chance to see the work of three legendary photographers who all had a connection with Michael Jackson.

Fahey/Klein Gallery is currently presenting The School of Los Angeles, an exhibition bringing together the work of Herb Ritts, Greg Gorman, and Matthew Rolston.

Running from October 1 through November 28, 2026, the exhibition examines the work of the three photographers who became influential figures in Los Angeles photography from the late 1970s through the 1980s and early 1990s.

While the exhibition is not dedicated to Michael Jackson, fans will certainly recognise the names of all three photographers.

Herb Ritts photographed Michael Jackson on several occasions, including the famous portrait used for Michael’s January 1992 Rolling Stone cover. Ritts became known for his distinctive use of light, form and sculptural poses, creating some of the most recognisable celebrity portraits of his generation.

Greg Gorman also photographed Michael, creating intimate portraits that focused on personality and expression. His work with many of the biggest names in entertainment made him one of the most respected celebrity photographers of his era.

Matthew Rolston has perhaps one of the most extensive photographic connections with Michael Jackson. Rolston photographed Michael for Interview magazine and continued photographing him throughout his career. Among his work is the famous Michael Jackson, King, Los Angeles, 1985 portrait, which is listed among the works presented as part of the exhibition.

The exhibition takes its title from the idea of a distinct “School of Los Angeles” developed by the three photographers. Rather than sharing an identical style, Ritts, Gorman and Rolston each developed their own approach to photographing celebrities and personalities.

The gallery describes their approaches as Ritts idealized, Gorman revealed, and Rolston transformed.

Their photographs appeared across magazines, advertising, album covers, music videos, television and film, helping to establish the visual language of celebrity that remains influential today.

For Michael Jackson fans, the exhibition offers an opportunity to see work by three photographers who each played a part in documenting Michael and the world of celebrity surrounding him.
