On this day 25 years ago, Michael Jackson released the song, “You Rock My World.”
The track was released on Aug. 22, 2001 as the lead single from Jackson’s album, “Invincible.”
Written and produced by Michael Jackson and Rodney “Darkchild” Jerkins, with additional songwriting credits going to Fred Jerkins III, LaShawn Daniels and Nora Payne, “You Rock My World” marked Jackson’s return to the charts after a four-year gap between studio albums.
According to Billboard, the song debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 on Sept. 8, 2001 and reached a peak position at No. 10 on Sept. 22 of the same year. The song would stay on the chart for a total of 20 weeks.
Interestingly, the song achieved its U.S. chart position through airplay alone, as no commercial single was released in the United States. Billboard chart expert Fred Bronson even noted at the time that had a commercial single been available, the song could potentially have reached No. 1.
Outside the United States, “You Rock My World” was an even bigger success. The song reached No. 2 in the United Kingdom and No. 1 in France, while also reaching the top 10 in numerous other countries around the world.
Released during the same year was the song’s short film, which is available to view in both extended and shortened versions.
Directed by Paul Hunter, the film features Jackson and Chris Tucker in their attempts to win the affections of Jackson’s leading lady, portrayed by Kishaya Dudley.
The film also includes appearances from Michael Madsen, Billy Drago, and Academy Award winner Marlon Brando, who plays the intimidating owner of the nightclub.
Brando’s appearance was particularly special because of his friendship with Jackson. In a 2002 interview, Michael described Brando as a “good friend” and spoke warmly about their relationship, explaining that Brando would visit him at Neverland or at his home.
Michael also revealed that Brando knew him extremely well and understood how to push his buttons when they worked together, calling him “a genius” and “the last of that generation.”
The production itself was also an expensive undertaking. Contemporary reports stated that the video’s budget increased from around $2 million to approximately $4 million as its star-studded cast came together.
The extended film, which runs for more than 13 minutes, was filmed in Los Angeles in August 2001 and became one of the most memorable visual pieces from the “Invincible” era. It also marked one of Marlon Brando’s final screen appearances.
Jackson also performed “You Rock My World” live at Madison Square Garden as part of the television special, “Michael Jackson: 30th Anniversary Celebration,” in September 2001. Michael performed the song during the concerts on Sept. 7 and Sept. 10, with footage later featured in the CBS television special.
The song would also earn Jackson a Grammy nomination for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance at the 44th Annual Grammy Awards.
Although “You Rock My World” did not become another No. 1 hit for Michael Jackson in the United States, the song has gone on to become one of the defining tracks of the “Invincible” era and, 25 years later, remains a fan favorite.
