Spike Lee has announced the return of his annual Michael Jackson Block Party in Brooklyn, continuing his long-running tradition of celebrating the King of Pop’s birthday with music, dancing and fans. This year’s event is also sponsored by Jordan Brand, adding another major name to the celebration.
The event will take place on August 29 from 12 PM to 7 PM at Fort Greene Park, with music provided by DJ Spinna, free for anyone to attend!
This year, the number of Michael Jackson birthday events taking place around the world is truly unprecedented. The annual celebration hosted by the Estate and Prince Jackson’s King of Popcorn event will be joined by dozens of other fan and commercial events, from a Michael Jackson birthday boat party on the Thames in London to celebrations in Hong Kong and many other cities.
The huge number of events comes as Michael Jackson is experiencing another extraordinary wave of popularity following the success of the Michael biopic. Organisers are not only counting on longtime fans to fill their events, but also on the new generation of fans discovering Michael through the movie, as well as the many people who have simply caught the “Michael Jackson fever.”
We saw a similar phenomenon following the release of This Is It in 2009, when renewed public interest brought many new people into the Michael Jackson community, even if many eventually moved on.
For this year’s birthday, however, fans have never had so much choice. Whether you are a lifelong fan, a new fan inspired by Michael, or simply someone who wants to celebrate Michael Jackson, August 29 is shaping up to be one very busy day!
