Fans hoping for more details on a sequel to “Michael” now have dates to look forward to.
According to an article by entertainment outlet, Deadline, Lionsgate Motion Picture Group Chairman Adam Fogelson gave an update on a production start and release date.
For a production date, Fogelson stated that “we are targeting a production start towards the end of this year or early next.”
As for a potential release date, Fogelson says the film could be released in late 2027 or early 2028:
“I think that end of calendar ’27 and the first half of calendar ’28 would be the current thought of roughly where the movie would go.”
Fogelson also shared details about budgets and shared that there are a number of sequences that could be used for the film:
“We do have a number of sequences, particularly some big musical sequences that were shot previously, that are almost sure to be incorporated, but we are mostly focused right now on how to make sure we can deliver, at the right price, the biggest, best sequel. That is what the audience is going to want and deserve after the experience we gave them the first time. So we’re not ready to give guidance on the budget yet, but we certainly will be able to take advantage of some stuff that we previously shot, as I said before.”
“Michael” was released in April of 2026, with Jaafar Jackson starring in the titular role portraying his uncle, Michael Jackson.
The film has broken a number of records including becoming the highest-grossing biopic of all time and crossing $1 billion worldwide.
“Michael” is available to watch on digital and physical formats and will begin streaming on Starz on Aug. 10.
