Over the course of his career, he recorded nearly 30 of his own albums and contributed to more than 1,000 recordings, performing alongside some of the most iconic names in music: Quincy Jones, Donny Hathaway, Curtis Mayfield, George Benson, Chaka Khan and, of course, Michael Jackson.

A Key Player in Michael Jackson’s Off the Wall Era

For Michael Jackson fans, Phil Upchurch’s name holds a special resonance. His guitar work appears on MJ’s Off the Wall album, including the energetic track “Workin’ Day and Night.” Under the production of Quincy Jones, Upchurch helped shape the sonic foundation of the album that marked Michael’s groundbreaking transition into adulthood as a solo artist.

Upchurch’s precise rhythmic guitar work added depth, fire, and groove to the Off the Wall sessions, complementing Michael’s vocals with an effortless finesse that only a seasoned, soulful guitarist could deliver. His role in this era of Michael Jackson’s career placed him among the elite collaborators who contributed to one of the most transformative periods in modern pop music.

Preserving Michael’s Legacy on Film

Beyond the studio, Upchurch also appeared in Spike Lee’s acclaimed documentary “MICHAEL JACKSON: Journey From Motown to Off the Wall.” His insights helped contextualize the creative explosion surrounding the Off the Wall project, not only celebrating Michael’s artistry, but also recognizing the musicians who helped bring that sound to life.

Upchurch’s presence in the documentary stands as a recorded testament to his firsthand experience with Michael’s work ethic, musical vision, and the electric energy inside the studio during that time.

A Life of Music Across Generations

Born in Chicago to a jazz pianist father, Phil Upchurch’s journey began early. At age 13, he received a ukulele, a gift that opened the door to a lifetime of musical exploration. He went on to master guitar, bass, and drums, absorbing influences from jazz greats like Oscar Peterson and Jimmy Smith.

After graduating high school in 1958, Upchurch began touring with The Spaniels, later serving two years in the U.S. Army as a radio reporter and musician. Upon returning, he recorded with legendary Chicago blues and jazz figures including Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, Etta James, Ramsey Lewis, and The Dells. His early single, “You Can’t Sit Down (Parts 1 & 2),” showcased his unique musical personality.

His versatility made him a go-to guitarist for film soundtracks, including Curtis Mayfield’s classics Superfly, Claudine, Let’s Do It Again, and Sparkle. He also composed George Benson’s single “Six to Four.” And in the late ’70s, he contributed to Chaka Khan’s hit “I’m Every Woman,” further cementing his place in R&B history.

An Artist to the End

Upchurch published two books and was working on his autobiography at the time of his death. His passion for music and storytelling never waned, and his influence continues to ripple through the work of artists who followed.

He is survived by his wife, Sonya.
