Fans of Michael Jackson have been buzzing, and now, with the release of the official trailer and poster for the upcoming biopic titled “Michael, Discover the making of a King” that anticipation has evolved into something more complex: a sense that the story will shy away from the darker chapters.
From the moment the trailer opens, the familiar thrill of Michael’s rise flashes by: electrifying stage moves, the floodlights, the crowd, the peak of pop glory. The poster and selected clips suggest the narrative doesn’t stop at the high-lights of his stardom, it trails into the making of music, dance and videos. Long-time fans who worried the film would gloss over the “bad era” now have reason to feel those fears confirmed.
Another striking detail: the casting of Miles Teller as John Branca (Michael’s longtime attorney and adviser) is clearly given weight in the trailer.
For many fans, seeing Branca in these contexts raises questions: How much of the narrative will explore the complex reality behind the legend? How will the film depict the later years, when triumph mixed with turmoil? The trailer seems to suggest: nothing.
As always with a project of this scale and a subject of this magnitude, the feelings are mixed. There’s excitement at finally seeing the story, but also caution: Will the full truth be told? What about the rest of Michael’s career, his body of work and the end of his life? I do believe that, as Michael Jackson fans, we are due an explanation, as the “darkest side” was promised to us when the movie was announced. Are we going to have a part 2? Is this fully confirmed?
But for now, the trailer has done its job: it has delivered a thrilling first look, nodded to the complexity of the legend, and left fans talking.
And here it is:
