Michael Jackson’s Iconic “Black or White” Short Film Gets a Stunning 4K Upgrade

In thrilling news for Michael Jackson fans and lovers of groundbreaking music visuals alike, the legendary short film for Black or White has been officially upscaled to 4K resolution. This marks a significant moment in preserving and revitalising the King of Pop’s artistic legacy for a new generation. It’s not quite 4K, it’s clear the Estate used an AI upscaling system to make it look like 4K, but it’s better than nothing.

Originally released in 1991, Black or White wasn’t just a music video, it was a global television event that pushed boundaries both musically and visually. Directed by John Landis, the 11-minute film featured cutting-edge special effects, including the now-iconic morphing faces sequence, and a powerful message of racial unity that remains relevant today.

The newly restored 4K version brings unprecedented clarity and vibrancy to the short film, allowing fans to experience its full cinematic quality like never before. From the electrifying dance sequences to the vivid globe-spanning visuals, the upscaled version reveals details that may have gone unnoticed in previous releases.

This restoration is part of the ongoing effort to preserve and celebrate Michael Jackson’s artistic work in the highest possible quality. Following the “4K” upgrades of other short films like Thriller, Billie Jean, and few others, Black or White now joins the elite ranks of Michael Jackson’s work presented in ultra-high definition.

The 4K version is now available on Michael Jackson’s official YouTube channel, inviting fans around the world to revisit or experience for the first time, the power, passion, and innovation of one of pop culture’s most iconic visual masterpieces.

Will all Dangerous short films get the same treatment? We can only hope!

It seems that the Estate tends to upscale Michael Jackson’s short films around the time Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab (MoFi) releases new MJ products. We saw this pattern with Thriller and Off The Wall. And now, following the announcement in June that Dangerous would be getting the MoFi treatment, here we are with the Black or White short film receiving a stunning 4K upgrade.
