The buzz around the upcoming Michael Jackson biopic, MICHAEL just keeps getting bigger! And now, it looks like the King of Pop’s life story may be too legendary for just one film.
During Lionsgate’s latest earnings call, studio exec Adam Fogelson hinted that the team is preparing for more than a single feature and fans might not have to wait long between releases.
“We’re not ready to confirm a second film yet,” Fogelson shared, “but the creative team is hard at work making sure we’re in a position to deliver more Michael soon after the first film.”
In other words… buckle up, MJ Fam. We may be getting a full two-part cinematic celebration of Michael’s life and legacy! A second movie was rumoured already to be a two-part movie and now it is already in the plan but not fully officially confirmed as yet.
Director Antoine Fuqua’s biopic is currently set to moonwalk into cinemas and IMAX on April 24, 2026. The date has shifted a few times.
And yes, Lionsgate has officially dropped the very first teaser as part of the marketing launch. Fans are already buzzing and emotional after seeing Jaafar Jackson (Michael’s nephew) fully transformed into his uncle, recreating iconic looks and moves with jaw-dropping accuracy.
The full trailer will debut in theaters next week, ahead of Now You See Me: Now You Don’t screenings, so make sure to get those tickets!
According to Fogelson, the first internal reactions have been overwhelming:
“People have been waiting a long time for this. We’ve seen wild enthusiasm. I think people are stunned by Jaafar’s performance — even from just the little bit in the teaser.”
Fans online certainly agree, early comments praise Jaafar’s likeness, presence, and emotional delivery. Many are saying it feels like Michael is back on screen.
With legendary producer Graham King behind the project and a story spanning Michael’s unprecedented career, it’s clear Lionsgate is aiming for the biopic to stand alongside the greats.
And now that a multi-film plan seems possible, it looks like the world will get a deeper, more complete story, something the fan community has always asked for.
