Lionsgate CFO Appears to Confirm Michael Sequel for Fiscal 2028

During a session at the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media & Telecom Conference, Jim Barge of Lionsgate may have inadvertently confirmed that a sequel to the upcoming Michael is already part of the studio’s long-term plans.

While discussing Lionsgate’s future theatrical slate and franchise strategy, Barge referenced the Michael Jackson biopic multiple times and notably mentioned “Michael 2” on three separate occasions. The remarks suggested that the studio is already planning a follow-up installment targeting release in fiscal 2028.

Although the comments were not presented as a formal announcement, the repeated references quickly caught the attention of observers following the development of the ambitious biographical project.

A Two-Part Story?

Speculation has circulated for months that the project could ultimately span more than one film, given the sheer scale of Michael Jackson’s life story, from his early success with The Jackson 5 to his record-breaking solo career with albums such as Thriller, Bad, Dangerous and HIStory.

Barge’s comments appear to reinforce the idea that Lionsgate is treating Michael as a potential multi-film franchise.

Fiscal 2028 Window

If Barge’s remarks reflect Lionsgate’s internal planning, Michael 2 would likely arrive sometime during the studio’s fiscal 2028 period, roughly between April 2027 and March 2028.

That timeline would give the studio room to release the first film, assess audience reception, and continue production on a second chapter if the initial installment performs as expected.

No Official Announcement—Yet

So far, Lionsgate has not formally announced a sequel. However, the CFO’s repeated mention of “Michael 2” during a major industry conference strongly suggests that the studio already sees the biopic as more than a single-film event.

With anticipation for Michael continuing to build, fans may soon learn whether the King of Pop’s story is indeed headed for a multi-part cinematic treatment.
