“In the Closet” Becomes Third Dangerous Short Film to Receive “4K” Upgrade

After Black or White and Remember the Time, Michael Jackson’s sensual and stylish In the Closet short film is now the third video from the Dangerous era to receive a “4K” upscale. The Estate took their time to get this one out and again, with no announcements or promotion.

Originally released in April 1992, In the Closet was directed by legendary fashion photographer Herb Ritts and paired Michael with supermodel Naomi Campbell in a desert setting that radiated intimacy, elegance, and raw energy. Shot entirely in warm, sunlit tones with minimalist staging, the video stood out for its understated sensuality and artful choreography.

The newly upscaled version sharpens every movement, texture, and shadow, highlighting the chemistry between Michael and Naomi, the rippling desert backdrop, and the fluid precision of Michael’s dance. The result is a more immersive viewing experience that captures the subtleties of Ritts’ iconic cinematography.

As with the other recent Dangerous-era upgrades, the release has been met with mixed feedback. While fans are pleased to see another of Michael’s short films available in higher resolution, questions remain over AI treatments and not a proper frame-to-frame 4K treatment. The AI upscale does give a blurry and washed out imagery so do not get too excited!

Despite the debate, In the Closet remains a testament to Michael Jackson’s ability to push artistic boundaries. Its fusion of music, fashion, and cinematic style makes it one of the most memorable and unique entries in his short film catalog. The 4K version is now available on Michael Jackson’s official YouTube channel for fans to rediscover in vivid detail.
