Farewell to MTV’s Music Channels — and a Tribute to Michael’s Legacy

This December will mark the end of an era: MTV is set to shut down its dedicated music channels in many markets, closing the chapter on decades of video broadcasting that shaped how millions discovered and experienced music. But as we say goodbye to MTV as a music‑video platform, it’s worth pausing to reflect on one artist whose influence on MTV was not merely symbolic, but foundational: Michael Jackson.

In October 2025, MTV’s parent company announced that MTV Music, MTV 80s, MTV 90s, Club MTV, and MTV Live would cease broadcasting on 31 December 2025 across the UK and many other regions. While the flagship MTV channel will survive, its focus has long shifted from music videos to reality television and general entertainment.

The closures reflect the seismic shift in how people consume music: streaming, social media, and on‑demand platforms have taken over. For many, MTV’s video blocks, chart shows, live performances, and the iconic Video Music Awards were daily rituals. Losing that shared space of visual music culture feels like losing a kind of public soundtrack.
