There’s a new MJ in town! Beginning September 2, rising star Matte Martinez will officially take on the legendary role of Michael Jackson in MJ The Musical at the Neil Simon Theatre, New York.
Martinez isn’t a stranger to the Moonwalk, he’s been dazzling audiences as the standby for MJ since joining the Broadway production in October 2023, and now he’s stepping fully into the spotlight. He takes over from Elijah Rhea Johnson, who will moonwalk off Broadway after his final performance on August 31.
A true performer from a young age, Matte first hit the stage at just 10 years old as part of the high-energy group Kidz Bop, touring nationwide. He later co-wrote a track for High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, and has graced screens in The Good Doctor and Saturdays.
Director and choreographer Christopher Wheeldon shared his excitement, saying: “Matte gives audiences a dazzling portrayal of MJ. We are excited for him to step into the part full time and lead the show forward with his exceptional performance.”
Elijah Rhea Johnson, a proud Detroit native, has had an unforgettable run. After making his Broadway debut in April 2023, Johnson brought passion and power to the role, having developed “Middle Michael” during the show’s workshop phase. He succeeded Myles Frost, who famously became the youngest actor ever to win a Tony Award for Best Leading Actor in a Musical back in 2022.
