Another ‘Michael’ Celebrates: Legacy | Artistry | Culture

Well, after all, the video of Jackson State University we posted a few days ago was part of “Michael: Celebrates Legacy, Artistry, and Culture.”

The movie’s social media just posted an edited version of the performance they did a few days ago, celebrating Michael Jackson. After the Florida A&M University performance, this is the second marching band video we’ve received from Lionsgate. What’s the relation to the movie? Don’t ask me, I’m a bit perplexed as to why we’re getting these kinds of promotional videos, even if they are awesome! I know, Michael Jackson inspired so many ways of making music, culture, and art. This has been done many times before, which we’ve been posting on MJVibe for years. While it’s great to represent Michael Jackson, paying tribute to him and his art, and inspiring new generations of performers, I’m still not sure what this has to do with the movie… maybe we’ll see this footage in the credits? Maybe!

Here the edited version:

In celebration of Black History Month and in anticipation of the theatrical release of “Michael,” Jackson State University’s (JSU) Sonic Boom of the South performed Michael Jackson’s hit “Don’t Stop Til You Get Enough.”

“Michael Jackson’s global impact on music and culture is undeniable,” said JSU interim President Denise Jones Gregory, Ph.D. “Featuring the Sonic Boom of the South in this national campaign reflects the level of excellence, discipline and tradition that define Jackson State University and HBCUs nationwide. We are proud to see our students represent that legacy on a national stage.”

According to JSU, “MICHAEL CELEBRATES: Legacy, Artistry, Culture,” pays tribute to Jackson’s legacy through performances rooted in culture, tradition and pride.

“For Michael’s fans everywhere, his legacy of performance and artistry is enduring. That legacy lives powerfully within HBCU communities, where music, movement and excellence have long been expressions of culture, pride and identity,” said Briana McElroy, head of digital marketing for the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group. “This initiative is deeply personal to me. I grew up listening to these bands that represent Black excellence, community and creativity. Partnering with these HBCUs is about honoring that legacy while creating space for the next generation to lead, perform and inspire.”

“Michael” releases in theaters everywhere April 24, 2026.
