Michael Jackson’s iconic “Thriller” brought a Halloween celebration to life in Old Town Alexandria, Virginia, on October 17, as 105 costumed dancers took over King Street for a special flash mob benefiting Lucky Dog Animal Rescue.
Organised under the name Dance for the Dogs ALX, the event attracted an estimated crowd of more than 1,000 people, who gathered near the Old Town waterfront to watch the zombie performers recreate the spirit of Michael Jackson’s legendary 1983 short film.
The performance took place at the intersection of King and Union streets, following hours of preparation as participants transformed themselves into zombies with Halloween costumes, special effects makeup and plenty of fake blood.
The event was coordinated by Barb Scheeler and Rachel Knapp, agents with Coldwell Banker Realty who also volunteer with Lucky Dog Animal Rescue and foster dogs themselves.
The idea was inspired by a similar event in New York and brought together two passions: celebrating Old Town Alexandria and supporting animals in need.
Speaking to The Zebra, Scheeler explained why “Thriller” was the perfect choice, noting how Michael Jackson’s music connects different generations. The song, originally released in 1982, remains one of the most recognisable Halloween anthems in popular culture.
Professional dancer Jelasia taught the choreography and led the performers through the routine. The group had completed eight lessons in preparation for the big night, with the months of rehearsals also helping participants build friendships along the way.
The organisers had initially hoped to recruit 100 dancers but eventually capped participation at 105, with additional people on a waiting list. Community members also contributed their skills, with several makeup artists and performers donating supplies to help create the zombie looks.
Beyond the spectacle, the event had a meaningful purpose. The initial fundraising total reached at least $3,700, with additional donations still being counted.
The money raised will benefit Lucky Dog Animal Rescue, an organisation that helps dogs and cats through foster care, medical treatment and transportation from high-risk shelters.
For Scheeler and Knapp, the fundraiser was an opportunity to combine their love of Michael Jackson’s music, their community and rescue animals in one memorable event.
Organisers hope the Thriller flash mob will return next year, giving even more people the opportunity to enjoy Michael Jackson’s timeless music while supporting a worthwhile cause.
