New Michael Jackson Documentary Coming to Disney+ and Hulu in February 2027: Is the Ice Between Disney and the Estate Finally Thawing?

A new documentary about Michael Jackson’s legendary 1993 Super Bowl halftime performance has been announced by Hulu and ESPN. Titled Spectacle: Michael Jackson at the Super Bowl, the feature-length production is scheduled to premiere in February 2027 and promises to reveal previously unseen footage of Michael and his team as they prepared for one of the most important performances of his career.

The announcement was made on October 13, 2026, alongside a short teaser carrying the message: “In January 1993, history was made.” The documentary will explore the story behind Michael’s appearance at Super Bowl XXVII, held at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California, and examine how his performance transformed the halftime show into one of the biggest entertainment events in the world.

Before Michael took the stage, Super Bowl halftime entertainment generally centred on marching bands, themed productions and established musical acts. His appearance changed the expectations for what the event could become, demonstrating that the halftime show could be a major attraction in its own right. His performance featured “Jam,” “Billie Jean,” “Black or White,” “We Are the World” and “Heal the World,” with the final number bringing thousands of children onto the field.

More than three decades later, the influence of that performance remains visible in the productions staged by the biggest artists in the music industry. Michael helped establish the modern halftime show as a global pop-culture event, paving the way for generations of performers to follow.

The documentary is directed and produced by Bao Nguyen, whose previous work includes The Greatest Night in Pop, the documentary about the making of “We Are the World.” That film explored the extraordinary gathering of artists who came together in 1985 to record the charity single co-written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie. Nguyen’s involvement is particularly interesting because of his previous experience documenting an important chapter in Michael’s musical history.

Spectacle: Michael Jackson at the Super Bowl is a Skydance Sports production, in association with Optimum Productions and NFL Films. Jesse Sisgold, Jon Weinbach and Lauren Gaffney are producing for Skydance Sports. John Branca is producing, with Karen Langford serving as executive producer for Optimum Productions. Amit Dey is producing for Into the Deep End Films, while Ross Ketover, Ken Rodgers, Keith Cossrow and Jessica Boddy are executive producers for NFL Films.

John Branca’s involvement is particularly noteworthy. As a co-executor of Michael Jackson’s Estate, he has been closely involved in managing Michael’s legacy and business interests. His participation in the production provides a direct connection to the Estate, although it does not, by itself, establish the precise extent of its involvement in approving the documentary’s content.

The first information released about the film is encouraging for Michael’s fans. Its stated purpose is to tell the story behind a groundbreaking performance, featuring previously unseen material and exploring Michael’s lasting impact on sports broadcasting and popular culture. There is currently no indication in the announcement that the documentary will be a controversy-driven production. Nevertheless, its complete editorial approach will only become clear when more details emerge or the film is released.

The documentary’s arrival on Disney-related platforms also raises an interesting question about the relationship between Disney and Michael Jackson’s Estate.

For years, fans have wondered whether the relationship between the two sides could improve, particularly following disputes and disagreements surrounding Michael’s legacy and the availability of certain Disney-related Michael Jackson content. The removal of the classic The Simpsons episode featuring Michael Jackson, “Stark Raving Dad,” from circulation in 2019 remains one of the most notable examples. The episode, originally broadcast in 1991, featured Michael providing the voice of a character named Leon Kompowsky, who believes he is Michael Jackson.

Could this new documentary signal that the feud between the Estate and Disney is finally over? It is an intriguing possibility, but there is no confirmed announcement that the wider relationship has been repaired. Disney’s involvement in distributing a documentary about Michael does not necessarily mean that every previous disagreement has been resolved. The participation of Branca and the production companies involved makes the project worth watching, but it should not be interpreted as proof of a broader reconciliation.

And what about The Simpsons episode? Could “Stark Raving Dad” finally return to streaming platforms or become available again through an official release? At present, there has been no announcement that the episode will be restored. However, any genuine improvement in relations between Disney and the Estate could potentially reopen conversations about previously unavailable content.

Another question concerns Captain EO, Michael’s groundbreaking 3D science-fiction musical film created for Disney theme parks. Directed by Francis Ford Coppola and featuring special effects by George Lucas, Captain EO became a landmark in the history of Disney attractions and remains an important part of Michael’s artistic legacy. Could this renewed Disney connection lead to Captain EO returning in some capacity, whether through an official streaming release, a special screening, a retrospective or another tribute?

Interestingly, there has already been a small but significant development this year. At D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event in August 2026, Disney released a special Fuzzball plush celebrating the 40th anniversary of Captain EO. The lovable alien sidekick of Michael Jackson’s space captain was brought back as an official Disney collectible, introducing the character to a new generation while giving longtime fans a nostalgic reminder of the attraction. Although this is not confirmation that Captain EO itself will return, it is an encouraging sign that Disney is willing to celebrate this particular chapter of its history with Michael Jackson. Could this be another little step towards bringing Captain EO back from the deepest reaches of space and onto Earth once again? For fans who have waited years to see the film return, the hope is certainly there.

There is currently no confirmation of any such plans. The documentary focuses on the Super Bowl performance, and its announcement does not mention either Captain EO or the withdrawn Simpsons episode. Nevertheless, fans will naturally wonder whether the project could be part of a broader willingness to revisit Michael’s relationship with Disney and make more of his work available to new generations.

For now, Spectacle: Michael Jackson at the Super Bowl is an exciting announcement in its own right. It promises a closer look at a defining moment in Michael’s career, with previously unseen footage and a director experienced in documenting music history. Its February 2027 release also places it close to the next Super Bowl, giving the story renewed relevance as the event continues to attract a worldwide audience.

Whether this documentary represents the beginning of a new chapter between Disney and Michael Jackson’s Estate remains to be seen. Could it eventually help bring back “Stark Raving Dad” or even Captain EO? Those possibilities remain unanswered, but the announcement has certainly given fans new reasons to ask questions about what might come next.
