What’s Next for Michael Jackson’s Estate?

The passing of John McClain has left many Michael Jackson fans with a difficult question: what happens next for the Estate of the King of Pop?

For years, McClain operated quietly behind the scenes alongside John Branca as co-executor of the Michael Jackson Estate. While Branca often handled the business and legal spotlight, McClain was widely seen as the more music-focused figure, deeply involved in preserving Michael’s artistic heritage and overseeing creative projects linked to his legacy.

Now, with McClain sadly passing at the age of 71, the Estate enters a new era, one that raises both legal and emotional questions for fans worldwide.

According to Michael Jackson’s 2002 will, the remaining executors automatically retain control if one executor passes away or resigns. With former third executor Barry Siegel having stepped down years ago, this now leaves John Branca as the sole executor with full authority over the Estate.

In practical terms, this means Branca now has complete control over all major decisions involving Michael Jackson’s business empire: music releases, licensing agreements, catalog management, brand partnerships, future documentaries, merchandise, and of course Michael biopic sequels.

Financially, the machine is unlikely to slow down. The Estate has already secured long-term agreements worth hundreds of millions of dollars, including major deals with Sony and other corporate partners. Those contracts are legally protected and designed to continue regardless of changes in management.

But for many fans, the concern is not about money, it is about trust, artistic direction, and the preservation of Michael Jackson’s legacy.

The Michael Jackson fan community has remained deeply divided on John Branca ever since he was named co-executor following Michael’s death in 2009. Critics often point to the controversial circumstances surrounding the will, which was challenged by members of the Jackson family, as well as decisions made over the years that many fans considered damaging to Michael’s image or artistic integrity.

Among the most controversial moments were the sale of half of Michael Jackson’s music catalog and the release of posthumous songs on the Michael album, where some fans and members of the Jackson family questioned whether certain vocals were actually Michael’s voice.

At the same time, supporters of Branca argue that his work helped transform the Estate into one of the most successful celebrity estates in entertainment history. Under his leadership, Michael Jackson’s legacy generated billions of dollars through projects such as This Is It, MJ The Musical, Cirque du Soleil productions, major reissues, and now the biopic.

Many fans also acknowledge that Branca played an important role during Michael’s career itself, helping negotiate groundbreaking deals that contributed to Michael becoming one of the biggest stars in history.

Still, with McClain now gone, many fans are wondering whether this could eventually open the door for a member of the Jackson family to become more involved in the Estate’s future.

One name frequently mentioned by fans is Prince Jackson, Michael Jackson’s eldest son. Some fans feel that having a direct family member involved would help bring the Estate closer to Michael’s personal values and artistic vision.

However, the situation is far from simple.

Recent legal disputes involving Paris Jackson and Prince Jackson questioning Estate spending and legal fees have highlighted ongoing tensions between the Estate and Michael’s children. In the case, judges ordered certain fees to be repaid, adding even more scrutiny to the Estate’s financial operations.

There is also the question of succession itself. At 75 years old, John Branca still retains the legal authority under the Michael Jackson Family Trust to appoint future successors if and when he chooses to step down. That means the future leadership of the Estate could ultimately remain within the same business structure rather than shifting toward family control.

Some continue to criticize what they see as a growing disconnect between the Estate and sections of the fan community, especially after reports of fan groups being excluded from certain official activities or criticism directed toward fans questioning Estate decisions.

The reality is that the Michael Jackson Estate has never been universally loved by the fan community. Yet despite the controversies, it has undeniably succeeded financially on a scale few could have imagined in 2009. Though we’ve always been clear that our love and support for Michael has never been dictated by how financially successful he was or his Estate are.

For now, the most likely scenario is clear: John Branca is still in control.

The real question is whether the future of Michael Jackson’s legacy will continue to be driven primarily by corporate strategy or whether the voice of Michael’s family and fans will eventually have a greater seat at the table.
