New Book Explores the Shockwaves Behind Michael Jackson’s “Black or White” Short Film

Black or White: Inside Michael Jackson’s Most Controversial Short Film
Hardcover | 30 December 2025
By Joseph Vogel

On November 13, 1991, the world paused for a Michael Jackson premiere.

Broadcast simultaneously across four major television networks and watched by an estimated 500 million viewers worldwide, the eleven-minute short film for “Black or White” was marketed as a celebratory event, a triumphant visual return after four years away from the screen. What followed, however, became one of the most debated moments in pop culture history.

Yes, there was joy, spectacle, and a message of global unity. But there was also rage. Shattered glass. Sexual aggression. And finally, a black panther stalking into the darkness of a Los Angeles alley.

The backlash was swift and severe. The final sequence was censored. Parents complained. Critics were confused. Network executives panicked.

More than three decades later, acclaimed author and cultural critic Joseph Vogel revisits that explosive moment in his new book, Black or White: Inside Michael Jackson’s Most Controversial Short Film, released on December 30, 2025. Vogel, best known for Man in the Music, widely regarded as the definitive Michael Jackson book, offers the most comprehensive examination yet of a short film that dared to confront America’s unresolved racial tensions at the height of Jackson’s fame.

Rather than dismissing the controversy, Vogel leans into it.

In this deeply researched and provocative work, he explores how Michael Jackson reshaped MTV and expanded the artistic possibilities of the music video format, while simultaneously becoming the most scrutinized body and face in popular culture. Vogel breaks down the revolutionary CGI morphing sequence, now iconic but once technologically groundbreaking and examines how it redefined visual storytelling in music.

At the heart of the book lies the infamous panther coda. Far from being a gratuitous act of rebellion, Vogel interprets the sequence as a powerful symbolic release: a confrontation with repression, race, masculinity, and what Carl Jung described as the “shadow self.” The panther, Vogel argues, was Jackson’s most honest and misunderstood, statement.

The book also revisits the censorship and moral panic that followed the broadcast, unpacking how critics and commentators misread Jackson’s anger while ignoring the cultural forces that shaped it. Set against the backdrop of early-1990s Los Angeles, the Rodney King beating, Hollywood’s racial mythology, and the lingering legacy of The Birth of a Nation, Black or White becomes a lens through which to view America’s ongoing struggle with race, power, and representation.

Blending cultural history, film analysis, and behind-the-scenes reporting, Vogel positions Black or White as one of the boldest artistic gambles of Michael Jackson’s career—and suggests that its message may be even more politically urgent today than it was in 1991.

For fans, scholars, and anyone interested in the collision of pop spectacle and social reality, Black or White: Inside Michael Jackson’s Most Controversial Short Film promises to reignite conversation around a moment when the King of Pop refused to play it safe and changed music video history forever.

  1. A gentle soul that was truly a legend & gone too soon. I saw him in 1997 at the old Wembley stadium. I took my daughter & son who were 11 & 9 at the time. I’ve seen many artists but none match MJ singing or performance wise. He didn’t mime to the music like many artists do today. We lost a treasure. I had tickets to see him I what would have been his last performance. I’ve missed him greatly 😔 😢 It’s a shame how he struggled with the pain from when his hair caught fire. I don’t think he got over it. People always mocked & misundstood him. This led to his demise. He’s at peace now & no longer suffering.🫶❤️
