Last March, we told you about the new fan-made company Collector’s Chance, which offers fans an opportunity to own a piece of Michael Jackson history. They created a trading card that included pieces of Michael Jackson’s legendary glove.
This month, they are back with a set of three trading cards featuring a piece of a black satin shirt owned and worn by Michael Jackson.
The shirt was an off-stage piece that Michael wore multiple times during the late 1990s and later gifted to Omer Bhatti in 2000.
The trading cards are limited to 200 in total: 110 cards contain a piece of the black satin material, 60 cards include a piece of gold ribbon from the sleeve, and 30 cards have a piece of the red armband. Prices range from $99 to $299 per card.
While some Michael Jackson collectors rushed to purchase the first set—and will likely rush to get these as well—others have questioned the ethics of cutting up historical Michael Jackson items, whether for goodwill or profit. Many comments on social media regarding the glove prompted Michael Jackson Hungarian fan Balazs Nagy, owner of Collector’s Chance, to release a statement saying the glove was so damaged it was beyond repair. However, this shirt appears to have been in good condition, and its disassembly will likely spark debate within the community once again. Should we profit by destroying a piece of history, indulge our own selfish desire to own a piece of Michael Jackson, or instead try to conserve and restore such items? Ultimately, that is a question each of us must answer for ourselves.
