Remembering Princess Diana

Today we remember the incredible life of Princess Diana, two decades on from her tragic death. From her wonderful humanitarian work, warmth and compassion to her iconic style and elegance, Princess Diana’s legacy continues to be a true inspiration to people the world over.

Diana was said to have been an enormous Michael Jackson fan, reportedly listening to Thriller and BAD on repeat, and long having hoped to one day meet the King of Pop. A meeting finally occurred in 1988, when Diana and Charles attended Wembley Stadium for the BAD Tour, with Michael donating £150,000 to the Prince’s Trust. He also gifted Diana two miniature tour jackets he wanted to give to William and Harry.

Michael was nervous about the meeting, but also about performing for the pair, even removing the song “Dirty Diana” from his setlist – until Princess Diana herself told him not to, as it was her favourite song.

“I took it out of the show in honour of her Royal Highness” Michael told Walters in 1997. “She took me away and she said “Are you going to do Dirty Diana?” So, I said “No, I took it out of the show because of you” She Said “No! I want you to do it… do it… do the song!”

Witnesses at the time remarked that Diana stood up and danced when Michael began performing the song!

The pair became good friends, Michael recalling in a 1994 interview that they had bonded over their shared distrust of the press.

“We were very close, especially over the phone. I was married then to Lisa-Marie. Diana used to call me and wake me up in the middle of the night – it would be maybe three in the morning in Los Angeles when she rang.”

“She talked mostly about her children and about the press. Lisa-Marie used to get so jealous she would go into another room, pick up the receiver and listen in. I used to say: “Diana, these phone calls in the middle of the night… you are ruining my marriage!”

Michael’s appreciation of Diana, in the wake of her death seemed to have grown even deeper.

“Lady Diana, in real truth, was one of the sweetest people I’ve ever known, because we could relate to each other. We shared something in common, with the press. I don’t think they hounded anyone more that her and myself. And we had a relationship, a very good relationship, where we would call each other late at night… just cry on each other’s shoulders, how hard and difficult and how mean the tabloids can be. And how they lie and twist stories around.”
