Michael Jackson‘s iconic, decade-defining video for “Thriller” is looking to jump off screens next year, as the 14-minute clip is about get treated to some of the 21st century’s entrancing 3D schemes. According to Billboard, after years of litigation (which was further complicated by MJ’s death in 2009 and the nearly half a billion dollars in debt he left behind) the video’s original director John Landis has officially been given the green light from The Estate go forth with taking the rework to the big screen.
After the creepy and deeply unsettling beyond-the-grave performance at The Billboard Music Awards earlier this year, hopefully Landis’ treatment doesn’t freak anybody out too much. It’s one thing to have a hologram of a dearly departed and a legion of his disciples paying homage to him. This, of course, is not the first big screen appearance MJ’s made, as the George Lucas-produced, Francis Ford Coppola-directed Disneyland exclusive Captain EO ran for ten years from 1986-96 and was played as a tribute in 2010 upon Jackson’s passing. As of right now, the release is slated for some time in 2015, so be sure to keep it locked as we close in on a firm date.
