Joe Jackson, hospitalized in Brazil.

A Brazilian hospital says Joe Jackson —patriarch of the musical family— suffered a stroke while visiting the South American nation in part to celebrate his 87th birthday.

An emailed statement early Monday from the Albert Einstein hospital in Sao Paulo says only that Jackson was admitted to the hospital Sunday afternoon after reportedly waking up feeling dizzy, with no vision.

The statement says that he is in the intensive care unit but does not say exactly what condition Jackson is in.

Local media say Jackson was absent from his own party because he was already in the hospital. Photos from his official website show him dining in Sao Paulo restaurants.

According family sources, doctors are running tests and they’re trying to decide whether to fly Joe back to the U.S. for further treatment.

21.43 GMT: Reports from TMZ saying Joe suffered 3 heart attacks and just underwent surgery for a pacemaker!

The 87-year-old was admitted to a Sao Paulo hospital Sunday after signs of a stroke. Joe lost his vision, and a publicist says it was the result of an artery bursting behind his eye, which triggered the stroke.

Family sources tell TMZ, once in the hospital he suffered 3 heart attacks.

Joe’s publicist tells TMZ, in the hospital Joe’s heart stopped beating for 10 seconds but he was revived. Joe just had a pacemaker inserted and doctors are now waiting to see if it stabilizes him.

We’re told Joe’s family wants him flown back to the U.S. for further treatment, but for now it’s too dicey.

-22.08 GMT: After the scare, he released a statement on his website, writing, “To my family, friends, acquaintances and fans all over the world. I want to thank you all for your prayers, unwavering support and kind well wishes during these trying times. Through God’s intervention the wonderful Doctors, Nurses and caretakers at the Albert Einstein Sao Paulo hospital have taken great care of me. God willing, I should be able to make a quick recovery and travel back home soon. Thank you all once again for your prayers and support.” He did not mention the heart problems that landed him in the hospital. “So far he’s doing okay, but he’s not out of the woods yet,” the publicist adds, noting that the family wants to move Joe back to the States for treatment as soon as possible.

Joe has suffered three previous strokes, including one in November 2012.

“He started having symptoms two days before [on Friday], and they were like, ‘You should see somebody,'” the publicist said. “A doctor came and said, ‘You’re okay, just get some rest,’ and then he started feeling dizzy again, and that’s when they said, ‘Nope, you need to go to the hospital.'”

-07.26 GMT (28/07/2015): Late Michael Jackson’s father Joe Jackson, who recently had three heart attacks, is been reportedly doing well and cracking jokes in the hospital after a series of surgeries. A source close to the Jackson family informed that the 87-year-old talent manger’s speech was not impaired and his vision has also been restored, TMZ.com reported. The source added that the father of late ‘Thriller’ hit-maker and Janet Jackson was grateful to be alive as he dodged death from very close. Notably, Joe had artery burst behind his eye that caused temporary blindness and triggered stroke.

-22.21 GMT (28/07/2015): Jane Jackson has shut down production on her upcoming The Unbreakable World Tour to be by her father’s side. On his 87th birthday, Saturday, July 25, Joe Jackson suffered a stroke and was admitted to a hospital in Brazil. The 49-year-old singer will stay with her father until he is stable.

Joe has regained his vision and is doing well as he recovers from heart surgery following a stroke, according to family representative.

Joe is starting to feel like his old self and has been cracking jokes from his hospital bed. He has also regained his sight and his speech is not impaired.
