Fan memories: Close encounter in a comic store

ComicsVert[The Golden Apple Comic Store in Hollywood, CA]

Rav Mayer Fuchs is only 14 years old in 1993 when he decided to go to the Golden Apple Comic book store in Melrose, Hollywood.

And here his story meeting the most famous person on the planet:

“At that time I was an avid comic books fanatic and was buying new books couple of times a month. When I entered the store, I felt something was different. There was some energy in the air. I looked around without understanding what was happening. The place was almost empty, except for several men wearing sunglasses around the store who were all focusing on one person in the background.

I had a closer look and I couldn’t believe who it was! Michael Jackson was in the store! I looked at the employees who nodded confirming I was right.

I tried to be cool and here I was, a tall, skinny Jewish boy with basketball shoes, standing in front of the King of Pop. And I asked: “Are You Michael Jackson?” – It occurred to me that this was a good way to  start the conversation. When he said yes, I sought to satisfy my greatest ambitions and asked for an autograph. He kindly agreed and signed a magazine that I just picked up.

“Why do you wear a Yarmulke (skullcap)?” asked Michael. I thought the meeting was over but Michael took me by surprise!

– “Can I ask you a question?”
– “Uh… of course” I said
– “Are you jewish?”
– “Yes” I replied
– “Why do you use a yarmulke?”

We shared a smile and very surprised he knew the word as this is usually only known by Jews. I tried to think of a good answer and replied “we use a yarmulke on our head to remind us that there is One upon us and that no matter how great we are, He is greatest”

He nodded, accepting the answer and said it was very nice. Then after talking a bit more, we shake hands and I left the shop all excited for having met Michael Jackson and having an autograph! The next day I went to school showing off my autograph and my story. […] Even after all those years, I still remember that day and Michael Jackson’s question always make me think and reflect on my answer.”

Michael Jackson visited the Golden Apple Comic Book Store numerous time throughout the years. here a picture of Michael visited the store in October 2008:

    • I agree, I miss him so much. But always remember, he’s never too far. Michael is not gone. He’s only physically gone, but spiritually he is still very much alive. He lives on through his music, and his legacy, a legacy we the fans must keep as pure as possible. I don’t let anyone in my school talk crap about him (“oh he was a child molester” “he bleached his skin” “he wanted to be white, he hated being black” exc.) without jumping into things and staighening out their story of false baloney. I feel it’s important that people know the truth. Though we all miss him, and wish he were physically here, he’s all around us. He watches over us and smiles from heaven. I hope he’s happy in heaven, because he deserves nothing but happiness.
